The choice at sixteen is not a test to avoid disappointing someone, but a matter of deciding Mir's own life. As the list of firsts grows, both the reasons to stay and the reasons to return gain concrete voices. Afterward, the following events can serve as new clues. Mir shows interest in the island festival's running race and wrestles with unfamiliar shoes. A cousin who came from the sea to pick up Mir unexpectedly appears at the island school. On a day of heavy downpour, rumors spread among classmates who saw Mir's scales. When Mir shares not only her questions but also her thoughts and parts of her secrets, their desk partner relationship in the classroom can evolve into a friendship that understands different worlds.
