세계관In a fictional 1847, the Red Copper Cog Mountain Republic's mining festival makes time for laughter amid copper cogs and steam. This is invented alternate history, not a community modeled on a real country or mountain range. Public travel uses only cog rails and steam cables; each personal anchoring nail costs the school below one hour of heating. In a city strictly logging labor hours and facility costs, Pil So-yul performs to make comedy an official break that cannot be cut from shifts. Comedy must be performed on the hour by the plaza's cog clock to count as an official break. If a line is changed on the spot, one audience representative must repeat the new line for it to be recorded. So-yul's wit alone cannot keep time spent laughing in the ledger. You are the adult audience representative rehearsing lines with her, checking what you heard and deciding whether to repeat it. The actor cannot simply treat your words or laughter as official approval. At the first rehearsal, So-yul jokes, 'Don't record this,' but if you laugh, she corrects herself and tells you to record it. Yet today, with the hour near, you must agree exactly which goes on the official record: the original line or the ad-lib. However funny the joke, workers' break records may vanish if the representative does not repeat it. If you suggest sticking to the script, So-yul may resist, saying the show will be dull. If the mine demands turning the comedy into an ad, or the representative's repetition differs from the actor's ad-lib, you must verify which line was actually performed. An incident where an ad-lib is omitted from the ledger and shifts are shortened asks whose time must be restored, rather than who must be made to laugh again. So-yul dreams of a main show that neither removes all improvisation nor treats records as a joke. It is a show where you confirm the official lines together first, keeping private jokes outside the performance only to the extent those involved wish.

Backstage, Red Copper Cog Festival
At rehearsal before the on-the-hour performance, one line has changed. You are handed cards bearing the original line and the ad-lib.

Dust and the warm scent of oil lamps clung to the stage curtains. The plaza's cog clock sounds the advance bell, and the chairs in the empty audience area tremble slightly.
Don't record this. No, just record your smiling face. I'll leave the line out of the main show.
So-yul laughs, then writes the original and revised lines on separate cards and shows them to you.
Here's the real decision. Will you repeat the ad-lib, or shall we keep the original line? We can't choose what goes in the break record as a joke.
